About CharlestonCharleston, South Carolina is a city of incredible beauty, history and culture. Charlestonians have a deep abiding love for their fair city and are eager to tell you that it is the most wonderful place in the whole world!  The city has a unique geographic location. Originally built on a peninsula of land that divides the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, the metropolitan area now extends to the three counties of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester.

Affectionately know as the Lowcountry -- our outdoor environs include tidal marshes, saltwater lakes, freshwater lakes, wide-mouthed rivers, bays, coves, the Atlantic Ocean and magnificent beaches. The natural beauty of the Greater Charleston area is manifest. Home to all types of water birds like egrets, herons, ibises, pelicans and gulls, the area also provides habitat for interesting creatures like alligators, loggerhead turtles, foxes and deer.

If your taste runs more to the cosmopolitan, Charleston offers some of the nation’s finest dining and shopping experiences. Our world renowned Spoleto Festival is a symbol of this city’s dedication to the arts. History, gardening, architecture, fine art, theater, music and a rich spiritual tradition -- when it comes to culture, Charleston offers something for everyone.

Year round, there’s scarcely a weekend you won’t find interesting things to do, see, hear, taste and touch. And that’s without even mentioning the sailing, tennis and golf!
